Josh Haden… Is it getting warm in here?

February 13th, 2007

I’m a sucker for a great love song and Josh Haden knows what he’s doing! Go sign into PayPal and send in your $12 for Josh Haden’s new masterpiece, Devoted, which is only available through JoshHaden.com (if you order by February 13 - that’s TODAY - you’ll receive a free gift). Then, prepare yourself for the romantic delight that will soon be delivered to your doorstep.Devoted cover

Josh Haden is the former bassist and singer of the group Spain. His latest CD, Devoted, features performances by former Spain guitarist Merlo Podlewski, keyboardist John Medeski, and turntablist Kid Koala. Josh sings with a soft and sincere voice that will woo even the most romantically reticent … he reminds us of what it felt like to have a crush on that rosy-cheeked girl seated two rows up in history class. Josh Haden is the real deal, folks - genuine and charming and haunting and….

Yes… yes it IS getting warm in here.

You won’t want to miss the Record Release Party on Thursday (2/15) at The Echo. Special guests include The Minor Canon and The Chapin Sisters. Josh Haden starts at 10pm.

Josh was featured this past week on KXLU 88.9’s Demolisten radio show. The archives are available for your listening pleasure.

Also, be sure to check out Josh’s podcast, Diamond Sounds. The podcast features more ambient and experimental sounds from the collection of our romantic hero. So far, my favorite episode is #2 - “Ancient Sounds Part One”.

“I wanna tell you about a girl…”

February 3rd, 2007

Priscilla Ahn has a sweet, clear voice… she seems to sing effortlessly. She is sincere and lovely… confident, yet modest. Shy, yet commands attention. It’s very refreshing to see someone of this caliber be so down to earth.

I booked Priscilla several times at the Nova Express, but hadn’t seen her perform in over a year. I was pleasantly surprised to see how far she has come.

Priscilla plays guitar, harmonica, and banjo. She also uses live looping to create symphonies with her voice and her instruments. Her band includes a cellist, a stand-up bass player, and a drummer. Everyone in the band was very good, but I was particularly struck by the cellist, Oliver Kraus. It wasn’t just his technical ability… he possesses a rare expressiveness that is absolutely captivating.

I had to fight tears throughout the entire show and I don’t know exactly why. Maybe it was the beauty of her voice, maybe it was just watching something so sincere, maybe it was the interplay between her and the cellist, maybe it was the wine… whatever it was, I want to do it again!

She has one show left as part of her KCRW residency at the Hotel Café and I urge you not to miss it.
